Bombing of Dresden
The Bombing of Dresden was an attack on the city of Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony, that took place in the final months of the Second World War in the European Theatre. In four raids between 13 and 15 February 1945, 722 heavy bombers of the British Royal Air Force and 527 of the United States Army Air Forces dropped more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city.[1[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Dresden_in_World_War_II#cite_note-1|]]] The resulting firestorm destroyed 40 square kilometres (15 square miles) of the city centre. Between 22,700 and 25,000 people were killed.

Only involved in one operation, Operation Rheinubung (May 18-27 1941). This operation was to raid the supply ships that was conveying the supplies from North America to Great Britain.

  • Canadian, British and Indian troops defended Hong Kong but were severely outnumbered. Led by Major-General Christopher Maltby
  • Hong Kong didn’t have a strong naval defense
  • Allied troops and Hong Kong had surrendered by the afternoon of December 25

v A total of 3,623 of the 6,086 men (almost 60%) who made it ashore were killed, wounded, or captured.
v The assault began at 5:00 a.m. and by 10:50 a.m. the Allied commanders were forced to call a retreat.
v The raid had the added objectives of boosting morale (Which didn’t happen)
v After less than 10 hours since the first landings, the last Allied troops had all been killed, evacuated, or left behind.
v Objectives included seizing and holding a major port for a short period.
